Former NFL referee Jerry Markbreit answers reader questions each week during the season

Jerry Markbreit retired from football officiating in 1998 after 43 consecutive seasons, including 23 in the NFL. Along the way he worked a record four Super Bowls and became one of the most recognizable referees in the game. For the past four seasons he's lent his expertise to ChicagoSports.com in the form of a weekly answer column. Markbreit also is the author of three books on the subject: "Last Call: Memoirs of an NFL Referee," released in 2001, "Born to Referee: My Life on the Gridiron" and The Armchair Referee. In his day job, he worked for the 3M Company as a barter and trade manager for 38 years. Use the e-mail form on this page to send a question about rules for high school, college or pro football.
